Judgment Day is a true-crime book with a difference. A collection of 18 criminal cases (predominantly murder) that have intrigued and terrified modern Australia. Each judgment is published in its entirety, and describes in detail the evidence pertinent to each crime and, ultimately, explains how judges arrive at sentences they impose. Judgments are also preceded by background editorial to provide readers with a broader perspective of the significance of each crime.
The cases include those of Melbourne gangland kingpin Carl Williams; Australia's female Hannibal Lecter, Katherine Knight, who murdered her former lover before skinning him and cooking some of his body parts; the Snowtown serial killings in South Australia; the murder of British tourist Peter Falconio in the Northern Territory outback and the Martin Bryant killing rampage at Port Arthur in Tasmania.
Ben Collins is a full-time writer at The Slattery Media Group, and the author of several books. His career in journalism began in 1997 as a cadet with The Courier in Ballarat. He then worked with Fairfax Community Newspapers before becoming one of the original reporters with the Herald & Weekly Times’ free commuter publication, MX, in 2001. He was the co-author of Jason McCartney: After Bali – the highest-selling non-fiction book by an Australian author in 2003.
